BESHARM (बेशर्म)
‘Besharam’ is a non-fiction book by Taslima Nasreen that provides a critical analysis of women’s rights, patriarchy, and the feminist movement in India and Bangladesh. The novel “Besharam” is not a direct sequel of the novel “Lajja,” but it can be seen as a continuation or reflection of certain aspects of “Lajja.” The central character Suranjan faces various challenges in his real life. In “Besharam,” the author incorporates these experiences and criticisms, portraying her own emotions and personal experiences as Suranjan enters her real life from the realm of imagination. Also, It is a collection of experiences written by the author over a period of time, and it covers a wide range of topics related to women’s oppression and gender inequality. One of the key themes of the book is the various forms of violence and discrimination that women face in South Asian society. Nasreen discusses the prevalence of domestic violence and sexual harassment, and she provides detailed examples of how these forms of violence are perpetuated and enabled by patriarchal attitudes and cultural norms. She also highlights the intersectional nature of gender-based violence, pointing out that women from marginalized communities are often at a greater risk of experiencing violence and discrimination.
Another important theme of the book is the role of religion and culture in perpetuating patriarchal attitudes and practices. Nasreen provides a critical analysis of the ways in which religion and culture are used to control women’s behavior and restrict their choices, and she argues that these traditions must be challenged and reinterpreted in order to promote gender equality. Throughout the book, Nasreen advocates for women’s rights and gender equality, and she offers a radical critique of traditional gender roles and expectations. She challenges the idea of “shame” and “honor” that is often used to control women’s behavior, and she argues that women should be allowed to make their own choices and live their lives according to their own values and desires. One of the strengths of the book is Nasreen’s willingness to speak out against injustice and oppression, even when doing so is unpopular or controversial. She does not shy away from challenging traditional cultural and religious practices, and she is unapologetic in her advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality. However, the book is also somewhat repetitive at times, and some of the essays feel like they cover similar ground.
